The South Carolina Department of Transportation broke ground Aug. 14, 2025, on the Interstate 95 widening and improvements project in Jasper County.

The project is in conjunction with the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Officials said the project’s purpose is to accommodate growth and improve the interchanges and bridges to fit modern standards.

Work will include the addition of a new bridge over the Savannah River.

The goal is to reduce traffic delays and congestion and keep people and goods moving smoothly and safely through the I-95 corridor, the officials said.

Said Gov. Henry McMaster: "People and businesses want to come to South Carolina, and we need the roads to support our momentum. Interstates like I-95 are essential to both daily life and long-term economic strength.”

State Secretary of Transportation Justin Powell said, "The first 10 miles of the I-95 Widening and Improvements Project is a significant milestone for SCDOT, marking the largest project in our agency's history.”

Powell added, “This long-awaited project is the embodiment of the goals of our interstate program that looks to improve the capacity and efficiency for the people of South Carolina and its visitors."

The project is set to be complete by 2030.
