Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News (GEN) recently named the Palmetto State among its “Regional and State Clusters to Watch” in its first-ever Next 10 U.S. Biopharma Clusters report, highlighting emerging life sciences ecosystems beyond the nation’s traditional coastal hubs.
GEN pointed to several indicators of South Carolina’s momentum, including the recent $1.5 billion Octapharma project in Rock Hill, GNQ Insilico’s expansion to Greenville, and Ritedose’s continued investment in Columbia. The publication also highlighted the state’s growing life sciences workforce, access to capital, and activity across hubs including Charleston, Greenville, and Sumter.
The recognition comes as life sciences continues to emerge as a priority sector for South Carolina. Recent industry data show life sciences employment in the state has grown more than four times faster than overall employment over the past decade, with growth since 2019 outpacing every other Southeastern state.
For South Carolina, the national attention is another sign that its combination of advanced manufacturing expertise, research and innovation assets, talent, and business-friendly environment is positioning the Palmetto State to compete for the next generation of life sciences investments.
