The South Carolina New Play Festival kicks off Thursday, Aug. 7, in Greenville, South Carolina, bringing several new attractions in its fourth year, including a live arts fair on Saturday.
The Spinx Market Live Arts Fair will showcase street performances from local live performance groups. The fair is free to attend and runs from 9 a.m. to noon on Main Street in front of the Spinx Market.
Performers include groups from the South Carolina Children’s Theatre, Greenville Theatre, Greenville Ballet and the Greenville Symphony, as well as Furman University and ARMES (Arts Reaching Middle and Elementary Schools) from Greenville County Schools.
This year’s additions to the festival reflect the broader vision of West Hyler and Shelley Butler, the Greenville residents and theater producers who started the festival.
“The festival is a part of Greenville, and Greenville is a part of the festival,” said Hyler. “I want to keep expanding into every nook and cranny of Greenville so that when you come downtown during the festival, there are live arts events happening everywhere they can. Every theater, every piano room, every bar. There’s something exciting happening, new theatrical work being created.”
The festival will also feature the Outdoor Variety Stage in Falls Park, returning for its second year.
The public can enjoy performances Saturday and Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. featuring Paris, the Hip-Hop Juggler; acrobatic acts from Daniel Craig and Natalie Abell; and performances from Carlos Cruz’ contemporary social circus, Nouveau Sud.
Since its founding in 2022, the South Carolina New Play Festival has become one of the fastest-growing theater festivals in the country.
Broadway actors, playwrights, producers and others involved in the industry now attend the event, which features workshop performances of new works at venues across Greenville.
This year’s festival also includes a competition for young actors, South Carolina’s Next Broadway Star. Finalists will perform on Saturday evening, Aug. 9, competing for scholarships to further their theater education.
Tickets may be purchased to watch the event in-person or via livestream.
Tickets to all SCNPF performances are limited, but the artists market and outdoor stage are free and open to the public. Go to southcarolinanewplayfestival.org for more information.
