Phased Turf Renovation Project to Begin at M.J. Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery

Posted

Beginning Monday, August 17, M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson will begin a cemetery-wide turf renovation project throughout all burial gardens. This improvement project is designed to enhance the long-term appearance, health, and sustainability of the cemetery grounds, ensuring groundskeepers can continue to provide a beautiful and dignified final resting place for South Carolina's Veterans and their eligible family members.

The first phase of the project will involve treating and eliminating the existing vegetation between the headstones. During this time, visitors will notice the burial gardens have a temporary brown or dormant appearance. Beginning the first week of September, crews will power rake the burial gardens to level the grade, loosen the soil, and incorporate soil amendments in preparation for new sod installation. Sod installation is expected to begin during the second week of September and will continue until the project is complete.

Officials with M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery want to assure Veterans, families, and visitors that all scheduled interments, memorial services, and normal cemetery visitation will continue without interruption throughout the renovation. Every effort will be made to minimize the impact of the work while maintaining the dignity, honor, and respect our Veterans and their families deserve.

Cemetery officials note their appreciation of the public's assistance in helping to communicate these temporary changes to families of those interred, and in helping to set appropriate expectations as these much-needed improvements are completed.
