In the high-stakes world of coffee chains, where giants like Starbucks or Dunkin dominate the landscape, one underdog story stands out for its grit, heart, and unyielding focus on human connection. Clutch Coffee Bar, co-founded by Darren Spicer in 2018, isn’t just another drive-thru pit stop. It’s a thriving privately owned chain with 20 locations across the Carolinas, built from the ashes of a shattered franchise dream.

When a Dutch Bros franchise agreement fell through, Spicer was left unemployed and a new dad with a young family to support. Unemployed, with a newborn at home and a family depending on him, most would have retreated to a 9-5. But Spicer rallied two co-founders, scraped together $450K and pivoted. Spicer decided to build their own with Clutch Coffee, a drive-thru concept rooted in convenience, community, and connection.

Spicer’s belief in community isn’t some polished slogan. It’s part of his DNA and existed long before fatherhood amplified it. “It’s easier to say and harder to execute,” he said. “Most of it is action-based, which is what we have done from year one.” When Clutch first opened in Mooresville, an officer was killed in line of duty about a block from one of their stores. “We banded together as a community, and conducted a proceeds day, where we donated 100 percent of the proceeds to support a cause the officer was passionate about,” Spicer shared.

Community alone doesn’t fuel expansion. Spicer knows the magic happens in the customer experience - the spark that turns a quick coffee run to a mood-lifting experience. When people come to visit Clutch, they are enveloped in surround sound, music playing inside and out, and baristas greeting you like long-time friends. “We exist to serve positive energy,” Spicer said. To keep the vibe alive, he invests heavily into monthly and quarterly check-ins to nurture growth and morale. The menu evolves too with eye-catching seasonal drinks, upgraded food pairings, and direct customer hooks via app alerts for deals, events, and promotions as well as a loyalty program.

The vision doesn’t stop at the Carolina borders. Spicer eyes the Southeast region being prime territory, with potential spillover into Georgia, Tennessee, or southern Virginia. “That’s our main focus, and I want to keep it in the South for now,” he said.

None of this happened in a vacuum. Spicer credits mentors like Travis Boersma, Dutch Bros co-founder and an “inspiring” guide through the chaos of growth. “He, along with the former founder of Hollywood Video, have been incredible resources and sounding boards as we scaled,” he shared.

For aspiring entrepreneurs glued to their notebooks, Spicer’s advice cuts through the noise. “Take action and go for it. You need to be strategic, but the first step is the hardest. Many have plans and ideas, but you have to point your feet forward,” he advises. In a world of endless ideation, Clutch shows that bold moves, fueled by community, positivity and a cup of the top 1 percent of imported coffee, can create empires. Find your spark, grab it, and drive through.
